Utrecht and The Way Things Sometimes Connect Unexpectedly
I was recently introduced to an amazing bookshop in Nakameguro called Utrecht and its owner and collector of books Hiroshi Eguchi. They have a great collection of new and old books in all areas of art, design and photography, together with limited and small edition publications and a very nice childrens books collection. Eguchi San gave me a copy of his own book of world paperback cover design called Cover and Cover (表紙とカバー) which is all based on his own huge collection.
Together with being good friends with Nieves, Utrecht also publish their own books, one of which is Rainbow in Your Hand by Masashi Kawamura, an art director in a wide variety of disciplines including some impressive music videos. It turns out he was also involved with Pitagora Suitchi (ピタゴラスイッチ) the television programme airing on NHK since 2002.
Not knowing any of this, on the same trip that i met Eguchi San i also picked up the 2 volume DVD set of Pitagora Suitchi for my good friend Stef. If you have a liking for Pythagorean Devices, Rube Goldberg machines or Heath Robinson contraptions, then you should probably have a look at some of the You Tube videos starting with this one.
Its interesting how things connect sometimes.
Slight Update: Rainbow in Your Hand is now available in the UK from Analogue Books in Edinburgh.
